KANSAS CITY, Kansas - - Charlie Kimball, driver of the No. 35 Team PBIR Firestone Indy Lights car, finished 15th and Jay Howard, driver of the No. 37 Team PBIR Firestone Indy Lights car finished 10th in Sunday's Kansas Lottery 100 at Kansas Speedway.
On Saturday, Kimball and Howard had two scheduled practices and a qualifying session for Sunday's Kansas Lottery 100. The first practice commenced at 9 a.m. and the Team PBIR drivers took to the 1.5-mile oval. After making adjustments to the cars during
Practice 1, Kimball finished 16th and Howard 10th with their race setups. During the second practice, the teams focused on their qualifying setups since qualifying was schedule for later in the afternoon. After the session the drivers felt comfortable, earning Kimball the 12th-position and Howard was 6th.
Team PBIR took to the track for their two-lap qualifying runs and Kimball earned the 7th starting position with an average speed of 186.101 mph. Howard took his Indy Lights car to the track for qualifying, but a fuel pump broke on the car resulting in the 22nd-starting position.
After inclement weather Sunday morning, IndyCar officials made the decision to move the race start time up two-hours. Team PBIR drivers climbed into their cars and started the 67-lap race.
Starting on the inside of Row 4, Kimball maintained his top-10 position and on Lap 27 ran the fastest lap of the race at 186.862 mph. On Lap 29, the No. 44 Firestone Indy Lights car spun and made contact with Kimball's right rear tire. On the Lap 31 restart, Kimball felt the car was not handling properly and brought the car onto pit road - - he had a flat tire. Kimball went back on the track two laps down and in the 17th position. Kimball managed to avoid accidents on Lap 33 and Lap 59. The heads-up driving earned him a 13th-place finish.
Howard started on the outside of Row 11 and on the first lap gained a position. Howard continued to maximize his car and gain spots on the 1.5-mile oval. On Lap 34, the caution flag waved and Howard was in the 16th-position. The race stayed green until Lap 59 and Howard had climbed to the 10th position. The race finished under caution. As a result of Howard's charge to the front, he was awarded the "Force For Earth Hard Charger" award.
